Trundle beds can be referred to as a form of bunk bed. A trundle bed is one bed that sits high enough off the ground for a second twin mattress to be stored underneath. The one notable feature that makes a trundle bed something other than a bunk bed is that the bed kept underneath is smaller than standard size, and they are considered to be two seperate beds, where as a bunk bed is considered two beds within one unit.
There are twin over full bunk beds available today. A full bed on bottom that sometimes sits perpendicular to the bed on top is useful for kids who are a little older. Some feature a futon style bottom bunk that can be folded into a sort of couch. This is great when kids want to play video games or watch television.
Staircase bunk beds are made out of a heavy wood. The unit is quite a bit longer than a standard unit, since there are wide stairs and a railing to the top bunk at the foot of the bed. Often this staircase is also a dresser, with drawers contained in each step. Many bunk beds also have drawers underneath the bottom bunk, as well. These features make for an even more space saving design, since it will eliminate at least some need for additional drawer space.
